Designed for Atlanta Magazine’s 2018 Modern Showhouse for Kate Hayes.

In conjunction with Ryan Hancock, we wanted to explore plaster as an exterior furniture finish. Attention to detail exhibited in hand-cut dovetailed drawers, inlaid knife hinges, leather pulls and brass edging throughout.

This desk was made for Farrah Kennedy: Chief Operating Officer of MailChimp.  Farrah's only request was that her desk be enclosed on two sides. I saw this as a great opportunity to incorporate bent laminations into her desk. The curve in each slat is achieved by laminating (gluing) three individual pieces (each 1/8" thick) together, clamped to a mold of the appropriate curve. While cutting the 36 pieces needed for all 12 slats, I noticed a few boards that contained exceptional curl (the vertical striping). I oriented all of the curly boards to the front of each slat to create the end result across the front of the desk.

Bent laminated slats - All slats are housed in traditional mortises: there are no screws or ledgers responsible for the connection of each slat. They are "floating" in between each mortise and allow for seasonal expansion and contraction of the desk.

This desk was made for Dan Kurzius: Co-founder and Chief Customer Officer of MailChimp. Dan's only request was that his desk be made from a dark wood. Since I love walnut, it was an obvious choice.

This desk was made for Ben Chestnut: Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of MailChimp.  Ben requested only three things: a detachable clipboard that he could use for hands free reading at his desk, but also carry to meetings as needed, a pencil groove (remember elementary school desks?), and casters so his desk could roll around. In collaboration with Industrial Designer Jordan Waller, we made those things happen. Jordan designed and fabricated all steel components.

This desk was made for Jenny Bloom: Chief Financial Officer of MailChimp.  Jenny simply requested an open desk with one drawer. After discussing some influences from her mountain house, I immediately knew reclaimed white oak would be the perfect fit for this desk. I drove an hour to Tallapoosa, Ga to purchase three reclaimed tobacco barn beams. These beams yielded dead straight quarter sawn white oak with some amazing character.
